Natives: Race and Class in the Ruins of Empire
From the first time he was stopped and searched as a child; to the day he realised his mum was white; to his first encounters with racist teachers - race and class have shaped Akala's life and outlook. In this unique book he takes his own experiences and widens them out to look at the social; historical and political factors that have left us where we are today.
Covering everything from the police; education and identity to politics; sexual objectification and the far right; Natives speaks directly to British denial and squeamishness when it comes to confronting issues of race and class that are at the heart of the legacy of Britain's racialised empire.
An excellent read, raising many issues and addressing the ‘silenced’ questions being raised. It’s time that all of us were educated about our full history, not a whitewashed (excuse the pun) version. There are, to my knowledge, few books that could communicate in such a way as to not alienate the non academic, yet provide such extensive back up to the points raised. Makes you look at a wide range of everyday life in a new light. It’s time that our young people were given a relevant education for the C21st, enabling them to move forward in unity to prepare, and address, the huge challenges that await them. Were better to begin that than with a totally revised curriculum, seeking to include the events of the past that are most relevant fr the present day and the future too. We can’t move forward unless we are given all the facts, and we can acknowledge them in order to work together for a better future for everyone.
Thanks to Akala’s extensive reading list there are other places for us all to seek to extend our knowledge.
I’d recommend this to young and old alike. It will help you view todays world in a totally different light.
